NOW LOOK WHO WE'VE REELED IN IT'S HUGH

CELEBRITY chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was in Weymouth yesterday filming scenes for his new Channel 4 series River Cottage Spring.

The eccentric cook visited Second Wind Watersports at Bowleaze Coveway and hopped in a sea kayak and went fishing for mackerel.

Meanwhile his eagle-eyed crew scoured the countryside for other ingredients as the team tried to put together an entire lunch without using any additives from the shops.

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall has earned a reputation for doing things differently with TV antics such as flambeeing a human placenta and serving it as pate.

He originally moved into River Cottage in Dorset - now home to several different projects - in 1998 to start cooking and rearing some of his own food.

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall said his latest series - due to hit screens in late May - focuses heavily on the seasonality of food.

He said: "What we're doing here in Weymouth is trying to create a decent meal without any added ingredients from the shops.

"This is the start of the fishing season and there are a few mackerel around. We decided to forego the advantage of power and go kayaking instead.

"I've done a tiny bit of it before, on holiday, but I've never gone fishing at the same time!"

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall is no stranger to Weymouth and has filmed here regularly in the past.

He added: "We've been out many times with Pat Carlin, one of the great Weymouth skippers.

"He's been fantastic over the years in finding fish for us. Now we are trying do it without his expert guidance.

"Whatever we catch, we'll be cooking. It's very exciting."

The kayaking was set up by the owner of the Second Wind Watersports shop, Terry Sallows, who also operates Jurassic Coast Kayak Tours.

He said he took the call from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's production crew just last week.

He added: "It's great for us to be involved in something like this. We were happy to have them and happy to help."

Weymouth and Portland have proved very popular with film and TV crews already this year.

New comedy The Boat That Rocked is being shot in Portland and the BBC recently filmed EastEnders scenes in Weymouth.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council communications manager Jacqui Gisborne said: "We're really on a roll at the moment.

"This latest show is brilliant because in sea kayaking it highlights an activity that not everyone realises is available down here."
